Emerson Nature Post

“Motion or change, and identity or rest, are the first and second secrets of nature: motion and rest.” – Emerson

I went outside and took a seat on the cool ground. It was chilly and I closed my eyes for a few seconds. The air brushed against my face as I experienced motion and rest in nature – two of the keys Emerson stated. I opened my eyes and didn’t feel anything but a little cold. It is about identifying the different elements of nature as shown in Emerson’s writing. The area was pretty much still. Bushes, trees, and grass decorated the scene but I couldn’t feel the Emersonian qualities. My mind wouldn’t be completely free of thoughts about the surrounding world. After a while, I became restless, got up, and left. I guess finding Emersonian’s qualities in nature wasn’t so easy for me.

I love honesty. Have a cookie.

I thought it was interesting how you tried to identify the parts of nature instead of nature as a whole. It's an interesting look at the idea of the microscopic versus the macroscopic in our world, and the similarities between the same.

I know what you feel. I tried to go outside and was only able to focus for a bit of time. I tend to get annoyed when I'm not doing anything spontaneous for a long period of time. I also took your point of view in searching for qualities of nature rather than just relax and enjoy nature. Personally, I like relaxing, but I don't like thinking while relaxing all that much, and that's why I sometimes fall asleep while in meditation.
